Carton Drop Test Check

Carton Drop Test
Carton Drop Test What is a drop test? Drop testing is used to determine your carton's ability to retain and protect its contents after a free fall. It duplicates the rigors associated with manual or mechanical handling at loading and unloading points. Drop tests are conducted on flat surfaces, corners and edges of the package or carton. A carton will generally withstand 6-10 drops on a combination of the packages flat, corner and edge surfaces
What is ISTA? The International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) is a global alliance of shippers, carriers, suppliers, testing laboratories, and educational and research institutions focused on how packages should perform to ensure protection of their contents. ISTA has created the industry’s testing standards and is trusted worldwide to inform global manufacturers how to survive the ever-changing hazards of a global transportation environment.
Drop test method:
Drop tests are mostly done on cartons with a maximum weight of 68 kg. This means that almost all cartons weighing under 68 kg will tend to be done manually so that the possibility of falling is greater than when using forklift or hand lift tools.
The testing method was carried out with certain rules in almost all corners of the cardboard.
  • The sharpest corner or tip of the carton
  • Corner along the thick side of the carton
  • Corner along the wide side of the carton
  • Corner along the longest side of the carton
  • The field of elongated direction
  • The smallest plane in the thick direction
  • The broadest plane in the longitudinal direction

Just do the test at some of these positions at a certain height (H) in accordance with the weight of the carton and its contents.
Height
The height of the carton from the floor is set according to the weight of the carton (gross weight).
Drop Test Height (See Chart) is Determined by Carton Weight
You may be curious about what height the carton should be dropped from.
Drop height is determined based on the weight of a carton. A carton that weighs less than 21 lbs (10 kgs) will be dropped from a height of 30 inches (760 mm), while a carton weighing 100 lbs (45 kgs) will be dropped from a height of 8 inches (200 mm).
Cartons are Dropped 10 Times During Testing (See Diagram)

When performing a drop test, the carton is dropped on its most fragile corner, three of its edges, and six of its faces. In the diagram below, you can see how the faces, edges, and corner are identified. table below you can see the details of the drop sequence. The carton will be dropped a total of 10 times.
After the Drop Test, Your Carton is Opened to Determine a Pass or Fail Result
Once the carton has been dropped from the appropriate height 10 different times, it will now be opened. The drop test is failed if any of the following is found.
Damage to the export carton
  • Damage to the product packages inside
  • Scratches, dents, or other damage to products
  • The products are not functioning as expected
  • If your cartons fail the test, it essentially means that they are not strong enough.
